Session Four

Dr. Robert G. O’Meally, renowned literary scholar, author, curator and musical historian, reflects on the intellectual contribution of Robert Farris Thompson and the broader genealogy of the study of Afro-diasporic arts. For Prof. O’Meally, Thompson represents a complete interruption in the way the African diaspora is conceptualized. Cuban composer, saxophonist and professor Yosvany Terry brings insights from his fieldwork on the Arará traditions of Cuba and its connection to Benin, demonstrating living diasporic connections through sound and culture. This is an example of research grounded in Thompson’s idea of Afro-Atlantic continuities. Their dialogue will reconsider scholarship, music and memory.
