Session Eleven

Africanist musicologist and multi-instrumentalist Dr. Michael Veal is a leading scholar in the field of Afro-diasporic music. In this talk, he will explore astronomy in relationship with music through what he terms “Sirius Musicology”—an expansive analysis of classical Dogon cosmology based on the discovery of Sirius B, a faint white dwarf star. Master percussionist, historian, community leader and babalawo, Chief Baba Neil Clarke, has performed with Randy Weston’s African Rhythm, among others. In his presentation, he will talk about his most recent research on African American hand drum traditions. Together, they will re-analyze the grounding of African sonic lineage as both historical and forward-looking.
